Dear mountaineering colleagues,
as agreed during the BMU meeting on 3-4 June 2017 in Kolašin (Montenegro), the Croatian Mountaineering
Association, in order to continue the good practice of expert thematic workshops within the BMU framework, will
organise the second BMU mountaineering instructor seminar in the Croatian coastal town of Starigrad and the
Natonal park paklenica from 9 to 12 November 2017.
The main goal of the seminar is to discuss and present best practices in training of mountain leaders and the
engagement of voluntary leaders in their clubs and associations. The activity will be executed within the scope of
work of the Croatian Mountaineering Association’s Mountain Guide Commission. The presenters at the Paklenica
seminar will be Croatian Mountaineering Association Mountain Guide Instructors, UIAA Mountaineering
Commission experts, Croatian Mountain Rescue (HGSS) instructors, National Park Paklenica experts and the Head of
the Croatian Institute for Emergency Medicine (HZHM).
We are kindly asking you to identify and support the participation of those instructors mostly engaged in training
of mountain leaders. We also suggest to ensure participation of an instructor competent in training of first aid as
well as personnel engaged in the organisational aspects of the mountain leadership structures (commissions) within
your association having in mind the importance of internal dissemination of such seminar’s conclusions.
Let us reiterate the conditions for participation at the seminar as follows:
• Each of the BMU member associations is allowed to submit 3 applicants, preferably mountain instructors
involved in mountain leader/guide training
• 35 € seminar fee paid till 1st of October 2017 to the account of Croatian Mountaineering Association (HPS)1
• Individual one-day climbing and hiking equipment (No ropes necessary!)
• Seminar application consisting of a „Hiking CV“ and a confirmation of a paid fee for each participant should be
sent via e-mail to: latest till the 1st of October 2017
Meals: two dinners, two lunches and three breakfasts, accommodation and entry-fees will all be provided by HPS

• Arrival by 6:00 pm and accommodation in the Croatian Mountain Rescue House in Starigrad. Opening
ceremony with an introduction to the programme
FRIDAY 10/11/2017
• 8:00 am – Joint mountain tour in National Park Paklenica. Demonstration of techniques, group management
skills and safety protocols by the guides from HPS (Croatian Mountaineering Association). Joint analysis
• 1:00 pm – Lunch
• 3:00 pm – HPS and PZS (Alpine Association of Slovenia) joint accomplishments presentation of the cooperation
with associations from Italy, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Hungary within the Erasmus + co-funded project
“Climbing for Everyone”. Special focus on the project’s activities regarding Mountain Training and
• 5:00 pm – Presentation by UIAA Mountaineering Commission members (discussing the latest developments
regarding instructor training and recent EU directives)
• 7:00 pm – Dinner
• 8:00 pm – Lecture on education and upgrading skills within an organizational mountain leader framework in
SATURDAY 11/11/2017
• 9:00 am – Lecture on upgrading voluntary leader knowledge, with a focus on skills in the field of First Aid,
based on the recommendations issued by the relevant State authority and the Croatian Institute for Emergency
Medicine (HZHM)
• 11:00 am – Lecture on the importance of the niche of voluntary leadership in the mountain safety and
prevention scheme emphasized by Croatian Mountain Rescue (HGSS) instructors
• 12:00 am. – Lecture on mountain leader’s role at a grass-root level: the activities within the one’s associations
and clubs are of great importance to their primary function – the organized mountain tours
• 1:00 pm – Lunch
• 3:00 pm – Workshop on the role of a mountain instructor within the framework of First Aid training
• 5:00 pm – Presentations of the experiences gathered during the implementation and UIAA accreditation of
training schemes for voluntary leader training in the fields of Summer Hiking, Winter Hiking and Snow-shoeing
and Single and Multi-pitch Sport Climbing. The preparatory work and relevant considerations for the
accreditation of the Rock Climbing UIAA standard will also be presented

SUNDAY 12/11/2017
• 9:00 am – Seminar analysis and joint discussion on on the topic of further consolidation of voluntary mountain
leader cooperation at BMU level
• 11:00 am – Closing ceremony
