Mountain Guides Training organized by the Mountaineering Federation of North Macedonia (FPSM), in the frames of the UNDP Project “Improving the management of protected areas”.
Certified training of 27 female mountain guides
September 3-7, 2020, Pelister National Park, North Macedonia
“It was a very hard Programme, the training was customized for the participants which previously were not members of mountain clubs and the instructors were very patient, coordinated, and real gentlemen”.
This is one of the few comments by the group of 27 female candidates of the Mountain Guides Training organized by the Mountaineering Federation of North Macedonia (FPSM), in the frames of the UNDP Project “Improving the management of protected areas”.
Out of 38 applications by women, unexperienced and experienced mountaineers, only 27 had been accepted to attend the training organized at the National Park Pelister, September 3- 7, 2020
The training was scheduled for April 12th 2020, but due to the ongoing pandemic, it was postponed till September 3rd 2020. In the meantime many online meetings with selected candidates were performed. The selected candidates were working on five practical assignments (knots, navigation and GPS applications). Live meetings in small groups were organized (up to 4 candidates). The candidates were obliged to prepare a Protocol for training of mountain guides adjusted with the Government protocols and the UIAA recommendations, and to buy technical mountaineering equipment for the training. After the training, a 2-year long trainee period will follow during which the candidates have to work under supervision of selected mentors.
The UNDP project “Improving management of protected areas” and FPSM’s training have addressed the lack of female mountain guides. It will empower women to actively participate in National Park activities for sustainable tourism, and to support the local communities in their economic growth and sustainable utilization of natural resources.
