Activities report of Mountain Rescue Service Station Sarajevo

The weekends from the 7th to the 8th February 2009, a joint exercise of all stations of the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) of B&H took place. According to the scenario, it was planned that the avalanche catch two mountaineers from a group of five members, so the rest of three call the Mountain Rescue Service for help.

According to the scenario, it was planned that the avalanche catch two mountaineers from a group of five members, so the rest of three call the Mountain Rescue Service for help.
More than 60 rescuers from the whole B&H took an active part in the exercise. The host of the exercise was the Station of Sarajevo. The exercise took place on the locality Kotlova on Bjelašnica. The first task was probing of the avalanche area which afterwards was searched with the so-called avalanche locators. After the discovering of the victims, they were medically treated, and then, one could proceed to the transport from the avalanche area. After arriving on the ski-slopes, up to Babin dol, the victims were transported in accordance with the techniques meant for the transport of injured skiers.
The rescuers from Goražde, Mostar, Bugojno, Travnik, D.Vakuf, Bihać, Zavidovići and Sarajevo, the Mountain Rescue Service Jahorina and the members of the Unit for the Support of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Sarajevo Canton and SIPA members took part in the exercise. The meteorological conditions reigning on Bjelašnica corresponded completely to the conditions in which these misfortunes usually happen in real situation. The exercise took place on the occasion of the celebration of 25 years of the Olympic Games in Sarajevo. Via this exercise, checking of the rescuers’ preparedness has been carried out and new techniques of probing avalanche area with avalanche locators have been demonstrated which in a lot of ways reduce the searching time respectively increase the possibility and the chance that the victims survive
