MOUNT ARARAT

Agrı Mountain is the highest mountain in Turkey. Its summit is covered with snow and glacier throughout the four seasons. It is located in the borders of Ağrı and Iğdır provinces in the east part of Turkey. The mountain is located 16 km west of the Turkey-Iran border and 32 km South of the Armenian border. % 35 of the Mountain is in the borders of Iğdır, %65 within the borders of Ağrı. The nearest district from Iğdır province to Agrı Mountain is Aralık; the nearest district from Ağrı province is Doğubayazıt.

Ararat

The height peak of Agrı Mountain is 5137 meters. The scientists note that Agrı Mountain was formed in the 1st geological era and that the Mountain indicates features of a volcanic mountain which consists of basaltic lavas to 4000 meters and andesite lavas in the other altitudes.

It is possible to see different plants and animals in every route of the mountain which abounds in flora and fauna. Each area has its own features and beauties. Agrı Mountain is situated in the most continental and harshest climate. The winter is extremely harsh. The spring and autumn are short. It rains slightly and snows much more.

THE IMPORTANCE OF AGRI MOUNTAIN FOR MOUNTAINEERING SPORT

Mount Ararat attracts the attention of the mountaineers in our country as well as in the world with its climate conditions, kalpak glacier cover and its altitude. It is possible to climb Agrı Mountain from various routes. Each route has its own degree of difficulty, features and beauties. Climbing on the routes differs by period of the year.
The longest glacier tongue in Agrı Mountain takes part in Iğdır-Korhan route. During climbing on this route, it is necessary to climb on the glacier for a very long time. For example, in August, the snowy and icy district from Doğubayazıt route is reached in generally 5000 meters while in June, snow is seen in 4200 meters. The Iğdır Aralık route has more different characteristics. For those who want to climb with the technique of glacier, the route which is called Czech glacier -since the Czech carried out the first climbing- is suggested.
Mıhtepe district calls attention because it hosts the research on Noah’s Ark. Especially Iran, Armenia and Aralık plains are worth seeing as panorama. Küp Lake, Mıhtepe routes are the areas that are climbed and appealing.

According to the records, the first climbing for the purpose of scientific research was fulfilled by Professor Frederik von Parat on October 9th, 1829. As for the first winter climbing, it was realized by late Dr. Bozkurt Ergör, one of the ex-presidents of Turkish Mountaineering Federation on February 21st, 1970. In the coming years, especially in the second half of 1980s, successful winter climbing to Agrı Mountainwere fulfilled.

Although winter conditions hinder the visitors to reach the summit, in the summer months of 1980s, thousands of foreign and domestic mountaineers visited the mountain.

THE IMPORTANCE OF AGRI MOUNTAIN IN TERMS OF BELIEF TOURISM

Climbing to Agrı Mountain is not only for mountaineering, but also for scientific reasons and belief tourism. A large number of foreigners visit the region and want to climb Agrı Mountain for various purposes.

  • 08:00 Climbing to the camp site (4200 m). 3-5 hours

February 8th

  • 04:00 Climbing the summit (5137 m) and turning back to the 4200 camp. 10-12 hours

February 9th

  • Extra day for the summit.

February 10th

  • 08:00 Arrival at Çevirme Village (7-8 hours). Turning back to Doğubayazıt. Accommodation at hotel.

February 11th

  • Departure to Agrı through highway. Agrı-İstanbul by Turkish Airlines.
